Looking for some holiday decorating ideas? Start your quest by taking a Holiday House Tour of Edith Wharton’s The Mount in Lenox, MA. Who is Edith Wharton you might ask? And what exactly is The Mount?
A prolific author best known for the Pulitzer prize-winning novel,The Age of Innocence, Wharton honed her literary skills in a remarkably well-received tome on architecture and design entitled, The Decoration of Houses. Over the years she would continue to produce great literary fiction, but often indulged her passion for gardening, interior decorating, design, and travel in her writing. These passions ultimately led her to Lenox, MA, and a parcel of land she christened The Mount. Here she built a home that reflected her taste in art, architecture, landscape design and decorating. Although her tenure at the Mount lasted only 10 years, her artistic influence remains among the gorgeous grounds and dramatic interior.
Now a National Historic Landmark, The Mount is administered by Edith Wharton Restoration Inc., whose mission it is to preserve the property as a tribute to the author and to celebrate the arts. Open to the public for tours, special events, and educational programs, a trip to this historic estate is an absolute must do when visiting the Berkshires.
Which brings us back to the Holiday House Tours. With a gracious nod to the past, the Lenox Garden Club will deck the halls of The Mount with festive lights, garlands, wreaths, and trees bringing to life the magic of the holiday season as enjoyed during the gilded age when Wharton was in residence.
