The 5th Annual Berkshire Fermentation Festival presented by Berkshire Ferments is coming up September 22, 2019 at its new location, Ski Butternut. This day-long celebration brings together fermentation enthusiasts from around the region to educate and inspire others in an effort to preserve this ancient tradition. From 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM the event offers opportunity to purchase and sample a variety of fermented foods, as well as demonstrations and lectures about the process.
Fermentation, normally associated with beer and wine, but as you’ll learn at the Festival, fermenting can apply to a wide variety of foods, everything from chocolate and coffee to sauerkraut and kimchi. The resurgence of interest in the process stems from a concurrent interest in probiotics, a natural byproduct of the fermentation process.
In addition to the opportunity to learn from and interact with fermenters, festival attendees can also purchase books signed by the authors, whose mission it is to expand the understanding of and interest in fermented foods. The “Culture Swap” table at the event sprang from a desire to share with others prized bacterial starters and cultures. Sourdough starters, kombucha, and kefir grains are but a few of the wonderous things you may find..
The Berkshire Fermentation Festival has grown enormously since its humble beginnings five years ago. If you’re even the tiniest bit interested in exactly what can be fermented or how it is done, you should definitely plan on attending this event. Among the many surprises awaiting you there will be fermented meats, vegetables, sauces, juices, and more.
The innkeepers at the Staveleigh House Bed and Breakfast would be delighted to host you for this one-of-a-kind event.
