Walk down a brick-lined path in downtown Great Barrington and enter through the door that says “Taps, Cocktails and Victuals” and you will have arrived at 20 Railroad Public House.
Everything about this long and narrow restaurant feels cozy and inviting: exposed brick walls, warm wood tables and chairs, period lighting and a striking antique mahogany bar that stretches half the length of the dining room. This is a place where diners can relax, enjoy conversation and best of all get a great meal.
A key to the goodness here is the use of local-grown produce and humanely-raised meats from regional Berkshire farms. The menu offers a variety of choices, but the burger is definitely a top draw. A custom blend of house-ground brisket and short-rib makes it super tasty. Add the optional house-made applewood smoked bacon and you’ll know why Yankee Magazine Editors chose this burger as number one in Massachusetts.
Among other comforting entrees are fish and chips, meatloaf and roasted hen with garlic mashed potatoes. Vegetarians will find several appealing choices, such as Cauliflower Parm made served with marinara sauce and a fried artichoke sandwich. Several starters and salads round out the menu selection.
If you’re in a pizza mood, you’re in luck, because 20 Railroad also owns Lola’s pizzeria next door and diners can order one of its specialty thin-crust pies baked in a hand-built brick oven straight from Naples, Italy.
