While Tanglewood is best known as the Berkshire’s summer performance venue for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, it is also home to the Tanglewood Music Center (TMC). A summer academy for advanced musical study, TMV is also a wonderful place to go for summer concerts.
The TMC was founded by Serge Koussevitsky, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s director from 1924 to 1949. Opened in 1940, it continues to be a place where budding instrumentalists, singers, conductors and composers come to study under the tutelage of the symphony’s musicians and other invited guests. Over the years, many of those who studied at Tanglewood Music Center have gone on to perform with the BSO and other esteemed orchestras. Luckily for all of us, the TMC offers nearly 100 performances throughout the summer, featuring its orchestra and fellows. A full listing of these can be found on the TMC website.
A special summer highlight is the TMC’s annual Festival of Contemporary Music, scheduled this year for August 8-12, 2019. The world-renowned event features fellows at the music center working with premier composers of our time, in concerts that are often premier performances. For visitors, the festival offers an incredible chance to see and hear up-and-coming talent in a range of inspiring performances.
