MASS MoCa: A Beacon of Modern Art In The Berkshires

Set amidst the history and lore of the Berkshires is one of the best modern art museums in the country, MASS MoCa. The museum is located in North Adams, Massachusetts, and would be a perfect stop to make on your way to or from the Staveleigh House.

MASS MoCA is not easily defined, as it encompasses so much: painting, photography, sculpture, music, dance, film, theater, and works that defy any special niche.

Pay a visit and you’ll find indoor galleries that are as striking in their design as in the work they display. Or take a walk outdoors through beautiful 19th Century courtyards that showcase contemporary art pieces. Much of the work shown in the spaces or performed on the Museum’s stages is created on site during residencies that bring hundreds of talented artists to the North Adams campus year-round.

Visit today and you can check out more than 30 current exhibitions, featuring artists such as Laurie Anderson, Robert Raushenberg, Richard Nonas, and Titus Kaphar. In the performing arts area, MASS MoCa presents more than 75 performances a year, including contemporary dance, progressive bluegrass, documentaries, and other dynamic works. The museum also offers an impressive number of educational programs for adults and children.

This autumn MASS MoCa is presenting Freshgrass Festival 2018, September 14-16. This family-friendly event will have music on four stages and in the spacious urban meadow, highlighting both well-known and emerging guitar and banjo artists, and traditional and trailblazing performers.
