Hilltop Orchards Offers Winter Fun In The Berkshires

A beautiful hilly setting in western Massachusetts is home to an orchard, cidery, Furnace Brook Winery, and one of the most delightful places to head for winter fun: Hilltop Orchards, a 200-acre historic property in the Berkshires.

During autumn Hilltop Orchards is open for apple picking. Throughout the year its Furnace Brook Winery offers wine tasting. It also has a year-round Farm Winery Store that’s a great place to buy yummy cider donuts and other tasty items. But come winter, the setting becomes a winter destination for Nordic skiing and guided snowshoe hikes.

Hilltop Orchards has both skis and snowshoes for rental. You don’t have to have experience to try—neither is difficult to do. But for those who would like to have a some instruction, PSIA-certified instructor Russ Myer offers lessons for individuals and groups.

During full moon time, Hilltop Orchards offers special hikes and snowshoe treks. These have become such a popular event, they are now held year-round. The last hike of 2017 will be a snowshoe hike on December 30. Led by guide Holly Brouker, it will be about a 1½-hour snowshoe incorporating Native American traditions that relate to moonlight. Following the hike, there will be a bonfire, wine tasting, and entertainment. Be sure to check the Hilltop Orchard website for upcoming 2018 hikes.

As you’ll discover, one of the nice perks about skiing or snowshoeing out here is the après-ski atmosphere! Step iInside the Barrel Room and you’ll discover comfy leather couches, a large natural stone fireplace and big LCD TV. It’s a perfect post-workout place to relax with a cup of hot chocolate, cider, or glass of wine.
