Berkshires’ Red Lion Inn: Stellar Dining In Historic Setting

It’s hard to find many great restaurants that endure for decades, much less two centuries. Fortunately for anyone who walks through its doors, Red Lion Inn in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, is a rarity—a classy and elegant place that honors its past while delighting diners with the best of today.Green pine bough with pine cones and title, " Red Lion Inn: A delicious taste of New England."

Treat yourself and book a table in the Inn’s Main Dining Room where rich red carpet, sparkling chandeliers, stately chairs and white tablecloths set a formal yet welcoming tone. Red Lion Inn’s history is New England history, born of need and flourishing by relying on community, so it’s only natural that the kitchen draws heavily on fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Just like in the old days, the kitchen also smokes, cures, and preserves the best of summer’s bounty for use throughout winter.

The menu is upscale, with modern twists on traditional fare. An assortment of appetizers includes Salt Roasted Beets with feta, plums, and hazelnuts; and roast pumpkin and delicata squash seasoned with crispy sage and an earthy vinaigrette. Two New England roasts—turkey or prime rib—are superbly satisfying. Other delicious entrees include grilled hanger steak, seared scallops, and Berkshire pork loin. Do save room for dessert. The sweet offerings, including homemade apple pie and warm brown sugar cake, are delectable and a perfect ending to a four-star meal.

Red Lion inn has two other year-round dining options: Widow Bingham’s Tavern, a rustic setting serving hearty sandwiches, stews and soups; and The Lion’s Den, a downstairs pub with a cozy fireplace and entertainment nightly. The Inn also has a Courtyard for outdoor dining from June through September.
