Sustainability Thrives At Berkshire’s Taft Farms

More than 50 years ago, when terms like sustainable farming were relatively unknown, Taft Farms was taking it to heart. The family-run business began with a dream to preserve the beauty and fertile land it owned. Today, visitors can see and enjoy the glorious results of their inspired work.

Taft Farms is situated in some of the most beautiful land in Massachusetts, in the heart of the Housatonic River Valley and in the shadow of Monument Mountain Nature Preserve. It was the ideal setting to develop a farm using sustainable practices such as crop rotation and cover cropping. Without use of pesticides and minimal use of fertilizer, Taft Farms is a success story of sustainable growing. Stop by and you’ll find beautiful heirloom tomatoes, plump berries, and fresh vegetables that span the growing seasons.

You can purchase these and more at the Taft Farm Store, which also carries a selection of items from other local farmers. In addition to the store, Taft Farms has a Farm Deli that makes sandwiches with fresh ingredients on homemade bread. The Farm Greenhouse is a must-stop for home gardeners and landscapers, with a selection of vegetable plants, herbs, fruits and hard-to-find plants (tropical and succulents, for example). There is also a Farmhouse Kitchen where guests can enjoy fresh homemade soups, salads and entrees or pick up orders to go.

Stop by Taft Farms this fall and you will find more than 30 acres of pumpkins for the choosing. Other treats of the season—and many items available year-round—include apples, pears, root veggies, greens, eggs, meats and poultry, honey, and maple syrup. And as you’d expect of a place that grows its own fruits, pies reign supreme here. Apple, peach, wild blueberry, pumpkin, and pecan are just a few of the delicious options you can enjoy at the farm or buy to take home.

Before you leave, be sure to check out the delightful menagerie of animals—goats, chickens, llamas, bunnies, and more.
