The Berkshires area is a great place to head when you want to escape the city and get out into nature. At the Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary you can do just that.
Set along the slopes of Lenox Mountain—about a 30-minute drive from Staveleigh House—Pleasant Valley spans 1,000 acres of lush forests, meadows, and wetlands that provide a peaceful place to hang out for a few hours.
There are seven miles of trails that range from flat, short, and easy to a challenging hill climb. Three of the most popular are: All Persons Trail/Pond Trail, an easy 30-40 minute walk; Yokun/Beaver Lodge Trails Loop, a 1.5-mile hike that’s good for birders; and Ledges/Overbrook Loop, an 850-foot vertical trek to the top of Lenox Mountain that rewards with stunning vistas. Come winter, pack your snowshoes (or rent ones when you get here) and you can hike the trails in a blanket of snow.
Pleasant Valley Wildlife Sanctuary also offers informational programs throughout the year, such as bird and beaver walks and naturalist-guided canoe trips. Here are a few of the upcoming ones.
